The Diagnostic Value of Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology of the Breast Mass

Abstract
Fine needle aspiration cytology(FNAC) can be used in most patents with palpable breast mass. The authors reviewed 54 patients who had FNAC of th breast mass from May 1991 to April 1992 at the Department of surgery, Kang Nam Sacred Hospital,
Hallym
University.
The results of FNAC were compared with postoperatively histopathologic diagnosis. Among 54 cases, the cytologic diagnosis were malignant in 12 cases(22.2%), suspicious for malignancy in 4 cases(7.4%), benign in 31 cases(57.4%) and inadequate in 7
cases(13.0%). The cytologic diagnosis rendered in cases with subsequent histopathologic study in 54 cases and the result of 54 cases were malignant in 15 cases(27.8%) and benign in 39 cases(72.2%). All cases(12 cases) of cytologic malignancy were
histopathologcally malignant, 2 cases of 4 suspicious malignancy were malignant and 2 cases were benign. All cases(31 cases) of cytologic benign were histopathologically benign. FNAC yielded inadequate materials in 7 cases(13.0%). 1 cases was
histopathologically malignant and 6 cases were histopathologically benign. When the suspicious cases were included in malignancy, the overall accuracy was 95.7%, specificity was 93.9%, senistivity was 100%, positive predictive value was 87.5%,
false
positive value was 6.1% and false negative value was 0%.
We could conclude that FNAC is accurate and safe, and permits definitive discussion about treatment planning for the palpable breast mass.
